Outstanding Outcomes - Harry
Harry was admitted to Orchard Farm in 2014, he presented with significant concerns around gang affiliation and criminality. Harry suffered from a complex attachment disorder and struggled to forge meaningful relationships which made his care experience prior to Esland a difficult one.
After a period of stabilisation, Harry was supported to enter a mainstream school where he achieved 8 GCSEs and made lifelong appropriate friendships. Staff identified through activity planning, that Harry had a passion and talent for football.
The team at Orchard Farm supported him in developing this and recognised that the sense of belonging that Harry got through his gang affiliation was replicated in a meaningful way through team sports. Harry successfully gained a key position on a semi professional U17 football team and this provided him with an alternative to the gang and criminal activity that blighted his earlier years. Through sport, education and a nurturing staff team, Harry developed appropriate attachments and set foundations for a successful transition into adulthood.
Young people’s attendance and engagement with education is excellent, particularly given their starting points. Some young people had inconsistent school attendance in the past.
They are now fully engaged in education are making excellent progress and have clear plans for their future careers. The quality of care young people receive is of a high standard. This is because care planning is well targeted, responsive to diverse needs and under constant review.
Harry was scouted by Manchester City and attended their Summer Football Camp programme in the summer of 2016. From this, he gained a place at a prestigious Tameside Sports Academy to study Sport with a focus on Football.
Harry successfully completed a programme through YOT on Knife Crime and became a mentor at school for young offenders. Harry successfully transitioned through Esland’s Road to Resilience, moving into a group home before gaining his Independence Placement. Through our high warmth, high control approach at Esland, Harry was able to overcome his earlier experiences to access opportunities that many young people aspire to.
Had he not come to Orchard Farm, Harry’s Story would not have had the positive overtones that it does, he would have likely became further entrenched in the London gang culture and network and would not have had the access to sport and education that being placed at Orchard Farm provided.
